Who Are We?

The First Baptist Church of Sparr was organized on February 5, 1905 with ten charter members. We shared services with the Methodists in a one-room school building known as Woodman’s Hall. It was located on the present site of the convenience store on the northwest corner of Highway 329 and old US 301. Rev. Newton B. Plummer served as the first pastor of the small congregation.

In 1906, a one-acre lot was purchased on the southwest corner of Highway 329 and old US 301 (NE Jacksonville Road). On June 8, 1907, the church voted to construct its first building on the new property. The structure was to be 40′ x 60′ for a total cost of $1,000. Funds for the project were raised by a member pledge program and by efforts of the Ladies Aid Society. The project was finally completed in November 1911 with a congregation of 47 members.

During the 1950s, as the church grew, a new educational building was constructed to provide for Sunday School classes. During this time, a small, four-room structure was donated and moved to the property to provide additional space. Some classes were held in homes, and during a period of significant growth in the early 1960s, Bible study classes also met in the pastorium and on the church bus.

During the 1980s Sparr Baptist Church experienced another period of steady growth and began holding two morning worship services. A ten-acre tract of land was purchased approximately a half mile west of the existing location. Ground breaking for the new building which included a multi-purpose space for worship and fellowship, education space, and offices was held on November 21, 1993. Construction was completed in September 1994. A second building was completed in 2010 which included additional classroom space, a new office and reception area, and the Fellowship Center.

Not only has God blessed Sparr Baptist Church with wonderful facilities and a strategic location in Marion County, He has also allowed us to develop some key partnerships in our community that will impact northern Marion County for Christ as we seek to make disciples of all nations.
